The Department of the Federal Penitentiary Service of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug in the Russian Arctic announced the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny in Penal Colony No. 3. He felt sick after the walk and lost consciousness. After resuscitation attempts failed, prison doctors pronounced him dead. He was 47. The Kremlin has already reacted to the announcement of Alexei Navalny’s death.

“All necessary resuscitation measures were carried out, which did not yield positive results,” the official report said.

According to the Federal Prison Service, the cause of death is still being determined. According to a local source, Alexei Navalny had a blood clot removed.

« As far as we know, in accordance with all the rules in force, the Federal Prison Service is engaged in all inspections. In this regard, there are a number of rules that guide the Federal Penitentiary Service,” Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.

Navalny’s lawyer, Leonid Solovyov, declined to comment to Novaya Gazeta on the news of Navalny’s death. “On the decision of Alexei Navalny’s family, I am not commenting on anything. Now we’re finding out. Alexei had a lawyer on Wednesday. Everything was normal at the time,” the lawyer said.

Initially, Alexei Navalny was serving a sentence in a case of fraud in the penal colony No. 6 of a strict regime in the village of Melekhovo, Kovrov district, Vladimir region. Late last year, his lawyers said that since early December he had not been taken to the hearings by video link and that they had not been allowed to see his client. Later, it turned out that Alexei Navalny was no longer on the IK-6 list, he was in penal colony No. 3 in the village of Kharp in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug in the Russian Arctic. This colony is also called the “Polar Wolf”.

The Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia announced the organization of a procedural check on the death of Navalny.

Navalny has been in prison since February 2021, when the court, at the request of the Federal Penitentiary Service, replaced his suspended sentence in the 2014 Yves Rocher case with a real one. After his conviction in March 2022 on charges of fraud and contempt of court, he was transferred to a maximum security penal colony in the Vladimir region.

In August 2023, Navalny was found guilty of creating an extremist community and rehabilitating Nazism and sentenced to 19 years. Navalny was supposed to serve his sentence in a special regime colony.
