The U.S. authorities will ban Americans from new transactions with Kaspersky Lab from July 20, and from September 29, the company will not be able to provide software updates to existing customers. This is reported by Wired with reference to a statement by the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden.

Existing U.S. customers can continue to use Kaspersky products and receive software updates until September 29, 2024.

After September 29, Kaspersky will not be able to provide security updates, and its software services will “degrade”.

The U.S. intelligence community has been warning for years that Kaspersky allegedly threatens national security, as antivirus software can be used by Russia allegedly to spy on companies.

“Moscow’s influence over the company was found to pose a significant risk“, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said on a briefing call with reporters on Thursday.

On June 20, Reuters reported on the Biden administration’s intention to announce plans to ban the sale of Kaspersky Lab software in the United States. The agency’s interlocutor mentioned the company’s “close ties with the Russian government,” which allegedly pose a serious risk.

On April 10, it was also reported about a possible ban on the use of Russian Kaspersky Lab products in the United States. It was noted that state-owned companies could not use Kaspersky at that time, and a potential ban would affect only private firms.

The ban applies to Kaspersky Lab’s three corporate entities and covers all of their antivirus and cybersecurity products.

The U.S. Commerce Department is implementing this ban under authorities granted in 2019, citing national security concerns related to Kaspersky’s potential ties to Russian intelligence agencies.

U.S. officials emphasize that current Kaspersky users are not breaking any laws but strongly encourage them to switch to alternative software as soon as possible.

The ban also extends to products that use Kaspersky software under third-party white labels
