The U.S. and Russian Secretaries of Defense Lloyd Austin and Andrei Belousov held telephone conversations today, reported the Pentagon. They discussed the conflict in Ukraine. Mr. Austin during the conversation stated the importance of maintaining communication between the U.S. and Russian militaries. This was announced by Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder at a briefing.

According to Mr. Ryder, the conversation took place at the initiative of the American side. The last conversation between the ministers took place on March 15, 2023, when the Russian defense department was headed by Sergei Shoigu. The initiative was taken by the American side.

Negotiations between the heads of defense departments are being held amid military drills. On June 12, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that a detachment of ships of the Russian Northern Fleet had completed a high-precision missile exercise off the coast of Cuba. On June 6, the United States conducted a second test launch of the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile without a warhead. The maximum range of this US missile is 15,000 km.
