Industry sources revealed that Paris has completed the purchase of Saab’s GlobalEye surveillance aircraft. This acquisition marks a significant step in France’s efforts to enhance its airborne early warning and control capabilities.

The GlobalEye, developed by the Swedish defense manufacturer Saab, is set to replace France’s aging fleet of AWACS E-3F Sentry radar planes.

This deal is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Franco-Swedish defense cooperation and European strategic autonomy in defense matters.

Last January, on the sidelines of President Macron’s state visit to Sweden, Saab made no secret of its desire to open a new chapter in cooperation between Paris and Stockholm by offering the Air and Space Force its GlobalEye radar.

The Swedish manufacturer’s solution is based on a Bombardier Global 6000 business jet, equipped with sensors insensitive to electronic jamming, an Erieye ER long-range radar, a SeaSpray active antenna radar [supplied by Leonardo] and an optronic ball. The data it collects from a distance of 400 km is then merged into a multi-domain command and control system [C2].

Sweden officially became a member of NATO on March 7, 2024, marking a historic shift in the country’s foreign and security policy, amid increased geopolitical tensions on the eastern flank of NATO since 2014.

This decision ended Sweden’s long-standing policy of military non-alignment and neutrality, which had been in place for over 200 years and strenghtened the defense cooperation with France, a founding member state of NATO.
