In France, the spire of the Rouen Cathedral caught fire, our local sources reported. The cathedral is a historical monument of the country, built in the XIII century.
The cause of the fire is still unknown. The fire started at the construction site at a height of about 120 m, work was underway on the spire.
The mayor of the city of Rouen, Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, said that all services were raised to fight the fire. About 70 firefighters are on site, with about thirty vehicles, including teams specialized in intervention in dangerous environments. It is not possible to access the Cathedral Square. The police are also on site. The fire broke out about 120 meters high. Objects on the platform and the protective white tarpaulin are on fire, but the spire itself does not seem, as it stands, threatened by the flames.
The cathedral of Rouen was erected in the period of the XII-XVI centuries. Its tower is decorated with a cast-iron spire, which appeared in the XIX century. The height of the building with a spire reaches 151 m, which makes it the tallest in France. The façade is decorated with 70 figures, inside the cathedral is the tomb of the founder of the Duchy of Normandy, Rollo, as well as the heart of the English king Richard the Lionheart, who loved this region.
The current fire remembers French people about the huge fire ravaged Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral On April 15, 2019. Having broken out shortly before 7 p.m., the fire broke out in the attic of this masterpiece of Gothic architecture, built from 1163 to the middle of the 14th century.
