On July 11, 2024, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket experienced a rare failure during a Starlink satellite launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The rocket’s second-stage engine failed to complete its second burn as planned, resulting in the deployment of 20 Starlink internet satellites into a lower-than-intended orbit.

The failure occurred during the upper stage restart, which was meant to raise the satellites’ perigee (lowest point of orbit).

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk described the event as an engine “RUD” (Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly), indicating an explosion or disintegration of the engine.

The company later stated that a liquid oxygen leak developed on the second stage, leading to the Merlin Vacuum engine anomaly.

SpaceX managed to make contact with 5 of the 20 satellites and attempted to raise their orbits using their onboard ion thrusters.

However, it is likely that all 20 satellites will be lost, as they may not be able to raise their orbits fast enough to overcome atmospheric drag.

The incident may impact SpaceX’s busy launch schedule, including upcoming crewed missions. However, the company has expressed confidence in a quick return to flight, citing its robust satellite and rocket production capabilities

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has mandated an investigation into the incident. SpaceX must complete this investigation and implement any necessary corrective actions before the Falcon 9 can return to flight. This failure marks the first significant issue for the Falcon 9 since a catastrophic explosion in 2015.

On July 9, the Ariane 6 achieved its successful inaugural launch. It is a significant achievement for Europe’s space industry, which is in competition with SpaceX.
