Former Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, in private conversations with House Democrats, said that it would be possible to convince President Joe Biden to withdraw from the race “pretty soon,” reported The Washington Post (WP), citing sources.

Unnamed sponsors of the Democratic Party told the Financial Times (FT) that their refusal to donate funds to the election campaign brought Mr. Biden closer to leaving the race. The interlocutors of the publication believe that the president may announce his refusal to participate in the elections this weekend.

Concerns about Joe Biden’s viability have escalated, particularly after his performance in the disastrous June 27 debate with former president Donald Trump. Calls for him to drop out of the White House race swiftly followed. Biden’s awkward interview with ABC News on Friday failed to reassure his critics.

The Washington Post material notes that Nancy Pelosi is actively trying to convince Joe Biden to quit the election race. In a conversation with some members of the leadership of the House of Representatives, she said that Mr. Biden is “close” to this decision. WP, such statements by Mrs. Pelosi were confirmed by three representatives of the Democratic Party.

Nancy Pelosi’s aides declined to comment on her congressional talks, saying the media was “fueling the hype” about her discussion with Joe Biden. On July 18, CNN and Politico, citing sources, reported on a private conversation between Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden, in which she said that his participation in the presidential election deprives the Democratic Party of its chances of winning.

The Financial Times writes that a boycott of Democratic Party sponsors could have brought Joe Biden closer to the decision to withdraw from the race. Earlier, the American media wrote that several sponsors suspended the transfer of donations totaling more than $90 million until the party replaces Joe Biden with another candidate. In a conversation with the Financial Times, sponsors claim that Mr. Biden “received a signal” to suspend donations. According to them, “irresistible pressure” is now being exerted on the incumbent president.

You just can’t head the list of a major party when almost the entire congressional delegation, the majority of donors and a large majority of voters think you should step aside,” one of the FT sources said. Discussions among Democrats about Joe Biden’s ability to win the election began after an unsuccessful debate with Donald Trump. The president himself called it a bad episode and explained the incident by a cold. After the debate, as the American media wrote, the Democrats began to discuss a possible replacement of the party’s candidate in the November elections, and Mr. Biden’s campaign headquarters faced the risk of a lack of funds due to sponsors’ doubts about his victory.
