Vice President Kamala Harris has emerged as the leading contender to replace Joe Biden as the Democratic candidate for the presidential election in November.

Joe Biden, who withdrew from the race, could be replaced by 59-year-old US Vice President Kamala Harris. Other potential candidates are Illinois Governor Jay Robert Pritzker (59 years old), California Governor Gavin Newsom (56 years old), Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (52 years old), Pennsylvania Governor Joshua Shapiro (51 years old), Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear (46 years old) and Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg (42 years old).

At the same time, The Washington Post reported back in early July that many in the Democratic Party were ready to accept the idea that Vice President Kamala Harris would be a candidate in the elections. Rep. James E. Clyburn has publicly stated that he will support Harris if Biden leaves. In his opinion, fellow Democrats “should do everything to support her, regardless of whether she is in second place or at the top of the list.” The fact that Harris is the best option from the party was also said by the leader of the Democratic minority in the House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries.

The vice president seems to be the most obvious candidate who can be supported even by Biden himself.

If Biden supports Harris, it will be easier for her to be elected, if he does not officially support her, then other politicians may enter the race. But I think that in any case, Harris will win, because many people think she is the most obvious candidate, she is known to Americans. In addition, roughly speaking, it will not be comme il faut to take a woman of color for a ride in the current Democratic Party,” the expert believes.

While Harris is currently the frontrunner with Biden’s endorsement, the final decision will be made at the Democratic National Convention in August.

What are Kamala Harris’ chances against Donald Trump?

Judging by the polls, Harris’s chances of winning the American election are about the same as those of Trump or Biden. The data shows that 92% of Democrats, 7% of Republicans and 46% of those who do not identify themselves with one of the two parties would vote for Harris. In Trump’s case, the numbers are almost identical: 7% of Democrats, 92% of Republicans, and 51% of the rest.

At the same time, as the expert notes, Americans still perceive her as a vice president, and not as a candidate. Therefore, it is worth waiting a little longer with accurate estimates:

“When the election campaign is launched, then its perception will change in the potential race against Donald Trump.
