Malaysia has sent Russia an application to join BRICS. This was stated by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on the social network X. He noted that the country’s intention to join the association was the main topic of his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. The day before, on July 27, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry visited Malaysia for the first time since 2015.
On June 17, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had said in an interview with China’s Guancha portal that Malaysia will soon begin the official process of joining the BRICS.

“We touched upon aspects of strengthening bilateral cooperation, and Malaysia insisted that existing relations be expanded and strengthened, especially in investment and trade, science and technology, agriculture, defense and military spheres, education and tourism, culture,” the Malaysian prime minister said in a publication on July 28.

BRICS now includes ten countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia. Argentina was invited to join the association, but after the change of leadership, it refused to do so. As Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko reported on July, 24 countries are in the queue to join BRICS.
During his visit to Malaysia, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also held talks with his counterpart Mohamad Hassan. The Russian minister invited Mr. Hassan to Russia. The ministers also exchanged notes on the establishment of cooperation between the Foreign Ministry’s Diplomatic Academy and the Malaysian Foreign Ministry’s Institute of Diplomacy and International Relations.

India fully supports the expansion of the BRICS, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at the plenary session of the bloc’s summit in August 2023 in Johannesburg. From January 1, 2024, five new Member States joined the BRICS, including Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia and United Arab Emirates.
By 2030, the BRICS+ could together account for 40% of global GDP and about 45% of the population, with 3.5 billion people. New memberships from 1 January 2024 will help to reach these numbers.
The next BRICS summit will take place in Russia in Kazan in October 2024.
