The United States plans to create a unified command of its forces in Japan, the parties will agree on this at a meeting of defense and foreign ministers in Tokyo in the “2 + 2” format, the Nikkei newspaper reported, citing sources.
Washington intends to improve coordination with the Japanese defense forces in this way and counther the China’s growing influence in Eastern Asia. The decision to create a unified command, as noted in the article, was made against the backdrop of the deteriorating security situation in Asia. The measure should improve the planning of joint exercises in peacetime and joint missions during conflicts, writes the Nikkei newspaper.
The agreement will be discussed and likely formalized at a meeting involving defense and foreign ministers from both the United States and Japan.
Now there are about 55,000 US Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine personnel in Japan, but they do not have operational command, and the authority belongs to the Hawaii-based Indo-Pacific Command, the newspaper explains.
It is expected that Tokyo and Washington will create a working group at a meeting on July 28 to discuss the details, the parties will announce the creation of a command in a joint statement following the meeting.
