Ukrainian troops are trying to break deep into the territory of Russia for the second day. The attack broke out in the morning of August 6.

The Russian President Vladimir Putin is holding a meeting on the situation on the border in the Kursk region. The head of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Colonel-General Valery Gerasimov, reported to the president that the advance of Ukrainian units deep into the region had been stopped. According to him, about 1,000 Ukrainian servicemen participated in the attack.

The head of the Russian General Staff estimated the losses of the Ukrainian side at 315 people: at least 100 killed, 215 wounded. He called the purpose of the operation the capture of the border area.

The Armed Forces of Russia, together with the border authorities of the FSB, are fighting with Ukrainian armed groups in the border areas of the Kursk region for the second day. The attack broke out in the morning of August 6. The Russian Ministry of Defense claims that the group’s advance deep into the territory of Russia is not allowed.

“In the Kursk direction, the enemy is not allowed to advance deep into the territory of the Russian Federation. His reserves were defeated in the areas of the settlements of Basovka, Zhuravka, Yunakovka, Belovody, Kiyanitsa, Korchakovka, Novaya Sich, Pavlovka, Gorodishche of the Sumy region,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

“The operation to destroy the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) continues”, added the Ministry.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine attacked the Russian border in the Kursk region in the early morning of August 6. According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the number of the Ukrainian group at that time was up to 300 people, 11 tanks and more than 20 armored combat vehicles were also involved.

The acting governor of the Kursk region Alexei Smirnov said that on August 6, as a result of massive shelling and attack by drones in the region, five civilians were killed, 21 people were injured, including six children. On August 7, Assistant Minister of Health of Russia Alexei Kuznetsov said that the number of wounded had increased to 24 people. According to the acting governor, the removal of residents from the shelled territories of the border to temporary accommodation points has been organized.

On August 7, Alexei Smirnov also reported that at night by phone he reported the operational situation to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who promised that support for the region would be provided in all directions. Assistance to residents of the Kursk region has already been offered by the governors of St. Petersburg, Orel, Lipetsk, Smolensk, Tambov, Tula and Voronezh regions.

In his video message in the Telegram channel, the commander of the special forces “Akhmat” Apti Alaudinov said that the goal of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is an attempt to delay Russian troops to the Kursk direction against the background of Ukraine’s failures on the front. According to him, the Armed Forces of Ukraine use their last reserves for this purpose and after their destruction, the special operation will reach the finish line.

The senator from the Zaporozhye region Dmitry Rogozin said that the targets of the Ukrainian troops may be nuclear power plants (NPPs). “There are two goals. At least of the already obvious ones. Zaporozhye and Kursk nuclear power plants. Atomic blackmail. This is what all the world media will definitely trumpet about. That’s the calculation,” Rogozin wrote in Telegram.

The Russian National Guard has taken additional measures to ensure safety at the nuclear power plant in the Kursk region against the backdrop of the ongoing attack by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). Also, the National Guard, together with the Ministry of Defense and the Border Service of the FSB, has built up forces to counter Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance groups.

The department also added that the Russian Guard, in cooperation with the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation and the FSB border service, has increased forces and means to combat sabotage and reconnaissance groups of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in the Kursk and Belgorod regions. In addition, additional forces have been allocated at the disposal of the operational headquarters under the leadership of the Acting Governor of the Kursk Region Alexei Smirnov.
