Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said that it is possible to achieve a settlement of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict only through dialogue and diplomacy. He added that India is ready to support any efforts to achieve peace.
Narendra Modi arrived in Kyiv on Friday for a landmark visit, the first by an Indian PM to Ukraine since the country gained independence in 1991. During his talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Modi emphasized the importance of “dialogue and diplomacy” in resolving the ongoing conflict with Russia
“The way to a solution can only be found through dialogue and diplomacy. And we must move in this direction without wasting time… I wish to assure you that India is ready to play an active role in any effort to achieve peace. If I can play any role in this personally, I will do it, I want to assure you as a friend,” Mr. Modi said at a meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky.
“No problem can be resolved on a battlefield,” Modi said ahead of his visit, adding that India supports “dialogue and diplomacy for the early restoration of peace and stability” in the region. He reiterated that India would continue to support a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

On August 8, Mr. Modi paid an official visit to Moscow, where he held talks with Vladimir Putin. Bloomberg wrote that the Prime Minister of India agreed to convey messages between the presidents of Russia and Ukraine.
While India has maintained close ties with Russia, it has also been engaging with Ukraine and the West to advocate for a negotiated settlement.
“As a friend and partner, we hope for an early return of peace and stability in the region,” Modi said before the trip. Ukraine welcomed the visit as an opportunity to engage with a country that has influence over Moscow.
However, Kyiv is not expecting any breakthrough proposals to end the war during Modi’s visit. The military situation needs to stabilize and the U.S. presidential election must be held before any serious attempt at negotiation can be made.
Nevertheless, the visit is seen as significant for India to demonstrate its willingness to engage with all parties involved and maintain its strategic independence. It also serves to strengthen India’s ties with Ukraine and the West while preserving its long-standing relationship with Russia.
