Turkey has officially applied to join the BRICS, Bloomberg reports, citing anonymous sources.

According to the agency’s interlocutors, Turkey thus intends to develop ties with all parties and strengthen its influence in the world. According to the administration of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the geopolitical center of gravity is shifting away from developed economies.

The expansion of BRICS can be discussed during the summit in Kazan, which will be held on October 22-24.

In June, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin welcomes Turkey’s increased interest in BRICS. Prior to this, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said during his visit to China that Ankara wants to join the BRICS.

Joining BRICS could provide Turkey with new avenues for economic collaboration, particularly with countries like China and Russia. Turkish officials believe that BRICS membership might facilitate better trade relations and access to financing through its development bank.

The desire for greater strategic autonomy is a significant factor behind Turkey’s application. Officials have stated that they do not view BRICS as an alternative to NATO or the EU, but rather as a complementary platform to navigate economic challenges.

By 2030, the BRICS+ will together account for 40% of global GDP and about 45% of the population, with 3.5 billion people. New memberships from 1 January 2024 will help to reach these numbers.

The next BRICS summit will take place in Russia in Kazan in October 2024.
