The Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov arrived in Saudi Arabia today, where on September 9 he will take part in a meeting of the strategic dialogue between Russia and the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC). The press service of the Russian Foreign Ministry published footage of Mr. Lavrov’s meeting at the airport in Riyadh.

The GCC was established on May 25, 1981 as a platform for cooperation between the states of the region on economic issues. The association also includes Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE and Oman. The headquarters of the organization is located in Saudi Arabia.

On September 9, Mr. Lavrov is scheduled to have bilateral contacts. In June, Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud participated in a meeting of BRICS foreign ministers in Nizhny Novgorod. In July, Saudi Arabia’s Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation.

July 9, 2024 Bloomberg wrote that Saudi Arabia could sell part of its European debt if the G7 decides to withdraw $300 billion in frozen Russian assets. They believe that other countries may follow the example of Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia joined the BRICS last January.

In June the Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, attended a BRICS Outreach ministerial meeting in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, where discussions focused on enhancing relations with developing countries and addressing global issues such as the Gaza conflict. This meeting underscored Saudi Arabia’s active engagement with BRICS, even as it weighs the implications of joining the group.
