Iran launched a significant missile attack against Israel, marking a dramatic escalation in regional tensions. This military action was primarily a response to recent Israeli airstrikes targetting Lebanon, that resulted in the deaths of key Hezbollah leaders, including Hassan Nasrallah. The Iranian military, specifically its Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), stated that the missile barrage was retaliation for these attacks on its allies in Lebanon.

Iran fired approximately 180 missiles towards Israel, with reports indicating that some successfully hit Israeli territory. This represents a larger scale than previous attacks this year.

The Iranian ballistic missile attack by the Revolutionary Guards was approved by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Islamic Republic’s supreme leader is still in an undisclosed location in Iran, for security reasons, since Israel eliminated its ally, Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah on Friday in Beirut.

Israeli officials have vowed retaliation, characterizing the missile assault as a “serious escalation.” They have indicated readiness to respond decisively at a time and place they choose.”

Joe Biden seems to have lost the initiative in the Middle East. After seeing his attempts to obtain a ceasefire in Gaza fail, the American president sees the spectre of a regional war that he has been trying to avoid for months approaching. The new Iranian attack on Israel, announced Tuesday morning by the White House, has made even more ridiculous the calls for a ceasefire by an administration at the end of its term, which is now only reacting to events over which it has little control.
