Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan during a telephone conversation confirmed the agreement to meet at the BRICS summit in Kazan this month. This is announced in a statement on the Kremlin website.
“The agreement to hold a separate meeting between Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan during the summit events was confirmed,” the press release says.
The Turkish president also congratulated the Russian president on his birthday. During the conversation, Putin and Erdogan discussed topical issues of bilateral relations and the international agenda, including the situation in the Middle East.
Earlier, Erdogan announced his desire to conduct a dialogue with Putin, despite all the existing disagreements. Ankara does not pursue “a policy mired in prejudice, but approaches problems from the point of view of reasonableness and solutions.”
Turkey is actively pursuing membership in the BRICS, a coalition of emerging economies that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and ten other members that joined in January 2024. Amid them is Saudi Arabia.
This move reflects Turkey’s desire to enhance its global influence and diversify its international alliances amid stalled negotiations for European Union membership.
The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will take part in the BRICS summit. Also, President of the Republika Srpska Milorad Dodik plans to meet with Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the summit.
By 2030, the BRICS+ will together account for 40% of global GDP and about 45% of the population, with 3.5 billion people. New memberships from 1 January 2024 will help to reach these numbers.
This year, applications for membership were sent by Malaysia, Azerbaijan and Syria.
The next BRICS summit will take place in Russia in Kazan from October 22 to 24, 2024.
