Donald Trump’s recent election victory has raised significant concerns in Ukraine regarding the future of U.S. support amid the ongoing war with Russia. Trump has said repeatedly that he wans to end the war in Ukraine and vowed to stop the massive financial aid to Kyiv.

Shift in U.S. Support

Potential Reduction in Aid: Trump has expressed skepticism about the extensive military and financial assistance the U.S. has provided to Ukraine, which totals over $110 billion since Russian troops entered into Ukraine in February 2022. His administration may prioritize reducing this support, reflecting his previous stance that European nations should shoulder more responsibility for Ukraine’s defense. In addition, after near 3 years of war, the small gains of Ukrainian forces lower the prospects of a U.S. support with Trump seating in the White House. Despite its large efforts, it seems that Ukraine would not be able to win on the battefield.

Negotiation Tactics: Trump has claimed he could end the war in Ukraine quickly, suggesting he might pressure both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin into peace negotiations. However, there are fears that any peace agreement brokered by Trump could favor Russian interests, potentially requiring Ukraine to concede territory, including Crimea and other regions occupied since 2014.

Ukraine’s Response

Skepticism and Resolve: Despite Zelensky’s congratulatory remarks towards Trump, many Ukrainians remain skeptical about his intentions due to his past words for Vladimir Putin and his controversial handling of U.S.-Ukraine relations during his first term (2016-2020). Ukrainian officials acknowledge that they may need to seek support from other Western allies if U.S. backing diminishes.

Continued Resistance: Ukrainian military personnel express determination to continue fighting against Russian advances, regardless of the political landscape in the U.S. They view ongoing resistance as essential to their sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Geopolitical Implications

Trump’s presidency may also affect NATO dynamics, as he has previously threatened to withdraw U.S. support from the alliance if European countries do not increase their military spending. This could create uncertainty for Ukraine’s security guarantees from NATO allies.

It is in a mixture of a worried wait-and-see attitude and pragmatism that the 32 member States of the Atlantic Alliance are preparing for the return of a Trump era. The Republican president-elect has stepped up his threats to withdraw the US from NATO, to which it is the main contributor.

The Trump administration has targeted several international treaties during the first term of Donald Trump (2016-2020), most notably the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, signed on December 8, 1987 by the United States and the Soviet Union as well as the Open Skies Treaty, signed in 1992.

Conclusion

Trump’s election introduces a period of uncertainty for Ukraine, as the nation grapples with the possibility of reduced U.S. support and a shift towards negotiations that may not align with its interests. The situation underscores the critical need for Ukraine to maintain strong relationships with other Western allies while preparing for a challenging geopolitical landscape ahead.
