Argentina’s President Javier Milei has recently been granted Italian citizenship, a move that has sparked significant outrage among various political factions and social media users.

This decision, attributed to Milei’s Italian ancestry, has raised concerns about the fairness of citizenship laws in Italy, particularly regarding the challenges faced by migrant children seeking citizenship.

During his visit to Rome, where he is meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Milei’s citizenship was confirmed by sources close to the matter.

Left critics argue that this swift acquisition of citizenship contrasts sharply with the arduous processes that many children of migrants born in Italy must endure to obtain similar rights. Italy’s citizenship laws are primarily based on blood ties, allowing descendants of Italian nationals like Milei to gain citizenship more easily than African migrants or their children born in Italy, who face stricter requirements.

The backlash has intensified discussions surrounding Italy’s immigration policies, especially as pro-african migrant groups advocate for a referendum to ease citizenship requirements, a proposal that faces resistance from Meloni’s right-wing coalition and the majority of Italian citizens.

Milei himself has expressed a strong connection to his Italian roots, stating in previous interviews that he feels “75% Italian” due to his family’s heritage. His relationship with Meloni has been characterized by mutual support, as both leaders share conservative ideologies and have collaborated on various political fronts.

It is estimated that at least 25 million Argentines, which represents approximately 62.5% of the country’s population, have some degree of Italian ancestry. This makes Argentina home to one of the largest Italian communities outside Italy, second only to Brazil in absolute numbers. The significant Italian immigration to Argentina occurred mainly between the 1850s and the 1950s, during which around 3.5 million Italians settled in the country.

European leaders praise the achievements of Javier Milei. Argentina has achieved a historic milestone by eliminating its fiscal deficit for the first time in 123 years, a significant announcement made by President Milei. This achievement is attributed to several aggressive economic reforms and austerity measures implemented since he took office one year ago.
