Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that a new contract for gas transit through Ukraine cannot be finalized before 2025. He emphasized that there is no existing contract and that it is impossible to conclude one within a few days, pointing out that Ukraine has not taken steps to extend the current agreement, which expires on January 1, 2025. Putin noted that Ukraine’s failure to book transit capacities in advance, as required by European regulations, indicates that they are not interested in continuing the transit of Russian gas.
No New Contract Before 2025: Putin confirmed the inability to sign a new gas transit deal with Ukraine before the end of the year, stating, “There is no contract, and it is impossible to conclude it in three or four days”.
Ukraine’s Position: Ukrainian officials have reiterated their stance that they will not renew the gas transit agreement with Russia when it expires. Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced that starting January 1, 2025, Ukraine will permanently halt Russian gas transit but remains open to discussing the transportation of non-Russian gas if approached by the European Commission.
Alternative Routes: Putin has indicated readiness to supply gas through Poland and other routes, despite acknowledging the complexities involved in European gas shipments following Ukraine’s decision.
In summary, as of now, Russia is preparing for a future without gas transit through Ukraine while exploring alternative supply routes to Europe.
The contract for transit through Ukrainian territory expires at the end of the year. Ukraine announced its unwillingness to extend it.
