U.S. President Donald Trump is going to sign a series of executive orders this evening on his Day One, focusing on border securityenergy production, economy and a thorough review of the U.S. trade relationship with China as he takes office.

Donald Trump is sworn in as the 47th President of the United States today, January 20.

Border Security Initiatives

Trump plans to declare a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border, which will enable him to access additional Pentagon resources for border security. This initiative is expected to include:

Reinstating the “Remain in Mexico” policy, requiring asylum seekers to wait in Mexico during their U.S. court proceedings. Thousands of migrants waiting in Mexico to enter the US with the Biden administration’s CBP One app have learnt their appointments were canceled immediately as President Trump took office on Monday.

CBP One went offline at 12 p.m. — the same time Trump was sworn in — according to an announcement from Customs and Border Protection.

Designating drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, which may lead to stricter immigration controls and potential travel bans.

Increased immigration enforcement actions in several major cities, including Chicago and Los Angeles are expected in the coming weeks, under Trump administration supervision.

Trump will sign 10 immigration-related executive orders today, including one that would move to end recognition of automatic birthright citizenship.

Energy Policy Changes

In an effort to boost U.S. energy production, Trump will declare a national energy emergency aimed at reversing many of the Biden administration’s energy policies. Key aspects of this plan include:

  • Rolling back regulations on fossil fuel production and mining.
  • Ending electric vehicle mandates and energy efficiency standards.
  • Promoting the extraction of critical minerals essential for technology and energy production, thus reducing dependence on foreign sources, particularly China.

Upon taking office, Trump has pledged to expedite the approval of LNG export terminals, including those operated by Venture Global. This aligns with his broader strategy to enhance U.S. energy independence and increase fossil fuel exports, particularly to Asian markets like China but also to Europe. Trump’s administration is expected to lift the permitting “pause” imposed during Biden’s tenure, which had stalled several LNG projects due to environmental concerns and legal challenges.

Trade Review with China

Trump’s administration will prioritize a review of trade practices, particularly with China, where the U.S. has experienced significant trade deficits. The focus will be on:

  • Investigating China’s compliance with previous trade agreements and addressing unfair trading practices.
  • Potentially imposing tariffs of up to 60% on Chinese imports and 10% on global imports as part of a broader strategy to encourage domestic manufacturing and reduce trade imbalances.
  • Engaging with Chinese President Xi Jinping early in his term to negotiate trade terms, despite the aggressive tariff proposals.

These initiatives reflect Trump’s commitment to an “America First” agenda, emphasizing national security, economic independence, and a robust energy sector while also signaling a confrontational approach to international trade relations.
