Marco Rubio took office as US Secretary of State, reports the Associated Press. US Vice President J.D. Vance sworn him in.

Rubio’s first meetings as head of the US State Department will be with Foreign Ministers of India Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Australia Penny Wong and Japan Takeshi Iwaya.

Earlier, the Senate voted to confirm Rubio as Secretary of State under the new U.S. President Donald Trump. This is the first high-ranking official of the new administration, who was approved by the upper house of the US Congress.

Answering questions from journalists, Rubio supported NATO and the point that the United States cannot withdraw from the alliance without the approval of the Senate or an act of U.S. Congress. He also spoke of the need for a tough stance on China, calling the Communist Party a dangerous adversary.

Answering questions about Ukraine, Rubio said that it is “unrealistic to believe” that Ukraine will be able to push Russian troops back to where they were before February 2022, and that the official US position should be that the conflict must end.
