President Donald Trump delivered a significant address by visioconference to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on January 23, marking his first international speech since being inaugurated as the 47th president of the United States on January 20. His remarks centered on trade policies, energy prices, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Manufacturing and Tariffs: Trump urged global businesses to relocate their manufacturing to the United States, promising some of the lowest tax rates globally. He stated, “Come make your product in America, and we will give you among the lowest taxes of any nation on Earth. If you don’t make your product in America… you will have to pay a tariff”. This approach is part of his broader “America First” agenda aimed at boosting domestic production and reducing reliance on foreign goods.
On October 29 during a public meeting the then Republican U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump had said the European Union would have to “pay a big price” for not buying enough American exports. Trump won the election on November 6 and now is ready to implement his distruptive trade policies.
Oil Prices and Ukraine: Trump linked high oil prices to the prolongation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, asserting that lowering these prices could lead to an immediate end to the conflict. He stated, “If the price came down, the Russia-Ukraine war would end immediately”. He plans to request that OPEC reduce oil prices to help mitigate Russia’s military funding.
Economic Strategy: The president emphasized his administration’s commitment to deregulation and tax cuts for domestic producers as measures to strengthen the U.S. economy. He claimed that these policies would channel billions into the U.S. treasury and reduce national debt.
International Relations: Trump reiterated his demand for NATO allies to increase their defense spending to 5% of GDP, which he believes is necessary for fair contributions towards collective security. He also expressed a desire for dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding a potential peace agreement in Ukraine but placed responsibility for the ongoing conflict primarily on Russia.
