U.S. President Donald Trump announced today that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to begin immediate negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. This development follows a 90-minute phone call between the two leaders, described by Trump as “highly productive” on his Truth Social network.

“We discussed Ukraine, the Middle East, energy, artificial intelligence, the power of the dollar and various other topics,” Trump wrote.

Trump stated that both sides would have their teams start negotiations promptly, with the U.S. delegation led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and National Security Advisor Michael Waltz. Putin also invited Trump to visit Moscow as part of their discussions.

Following his conversation with Putin, Trump held a separate hour-long call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Zelensky expressed Ukraine’s desire for peace and emphasized the need for U.S. support to counter Russian aggression. Trump assured Zelensky that Vice President JD Vance and Rubio would meet him in Munich on February 14 to initiate official peace talks.

Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman stressed: “President Trump spoke in favor of stopping hostilities as soon as possible and resolving the problem by peaceful means. President Putin, for his part, mentioned the need to address the root causes of the conflict and agreed with Trump that a long-term settlement can be achieved through peaceful negotiations.”

The Russian president also supported one of the main theses of the head of the American state that the time has come for “our countries to work together,” Peskov said. “During the conversation, the topics of the Middle East settlement, the Iranian nuclear program, as well as bilateral Russian-American relations in the economic sphere were touched upon,” Peskov said. According to him, Putin invited the US president to visit Moscow and expressed his readiness to receive American officials in Russia “in those areas of work that are of mutual interest, including, of course, the topic of the Ukrainian settlement.” “Putin and Trump also agreed to continue personal contacts, including the organization of a personal meeting,” said Dmitry Peskov.

This phone talk marks a significant diplomatic shift in the nearly three-year conflict, with Trump emphasizing the urgency of ending the “millions of deaths” caused by the war. However, concerns have arisen about Ukraine potentially being sidelined in these negotiations, as U.S.-Russia bilateral talks appear to be central to Trump’s approach.
