WASHINGTON— The U.S. next week will impose an additional 10% tariff on imports from China over its role in the fentanyl trade, President Trump said today.
The move, slated to take effect Tuesday, doubles up on the previous 10% of additional tariffs Trump placed on Chinese products earlier this month.
Existing Tariffs: On February 1, 2025, President Trump imposed a 10% tariff on all imports from China, which took effect on February 4.
Retaliation and Trade Developments: China responded with retaliatory tariffs of 10% and 15% on select U.S. goods, effective February 10, 2025.
Ongoing Trade Tensions: The U.S. and China continue to engage in trade tensions, with both countries imposing tariffs and countermeasures. The White House says fentanyl smuggled to the U.S. justifies tariffs against China and Mexico.
This trade war is likely to encourage the development of maritime smuggling in coming years or parallel import routes in order to circumvent U.S. customs duties on imports.
