Ukraine has agreed to accept a U.S. proposal for an immediate, interim 30-day ceasefire with Russia, subject to Russian acceptance and concurrent implementation. This agreement came after more than eight hours of negotiations between Ukrainian officials and a U.S. delegation led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The head of the office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, confirmed Kyiv’s consent to “the immediate introduction of a temporary, 30-day ceasefire, which can be extended by mutual agreement of the parties.” “The United States will bring to the attention of Russia that reciprocity on its part is the key to achieving peace,” he wrote on the Telegram channel.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that now “it’s up to Russia”, the ceasefire proposal will be transmitted to Moscow through several channels. “We hope that Russia will agree,” he said. US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz said that he would meet with his Russian counterpart in the coming days. Mr. Waltz stressed that Ukrainians are ready for peace.
The Trump administration said it would immediately lift a pause on intelligence sharing and military support to Ukraine, as Kyiv agreed to implement a 30-day cease-fire in top level talks with U.S. officials.
Saudi Arabia has already hosted negotiations on Ukraine. A U.S. and a Russian high delegations met in February, in an attempt to resume talks over Ukraine and bilateral agenda.
