Russia agrees to the proposal to stop hostilities in Ukraine, but the ceasefire should lead to long-term peace, announced the Russian President Vladimir Putin at a press conference following talks with Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko.
“We agree with the proposals to end hostilities, but we believe that this cessation should lead to long-term peace and address the root causes of the crisis,” he said.
Putin agrees with the U.S. proposal for a ceasefire, but emphasizes the need for it to be structured in a way that ensures long-term peace and resolves the underlying issues of the conflict
The Russian president also pointed out that there were questions about the details of the truce. Including what Russia should do with the servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) who remained in the Kursk region: “What does this mean? That everyone who is there will come out without a fight? Should we let them out of there after they have committed a lot of crimes against civilians?”
Putin also admits that Kyiv can use the ceasefire to continue mobilization, supply weapons, etc. According to the Russian leader, the front in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict is almost 2000 km: “Who will determine who and where violated the ceasefire agreements?”
Putin can discuss the nuances in the truce agreement with US President Donald Trump.
The initiative to organize a 30-day truce was made in Washington. On March 11, Washington and Kyiv issued a joint statement stating Ukraine’s agreement to cease fire for 30 days with the possibility of extension by mutual agreement. The American side undertook to bring this proposal to Moscow.
On March 13, US Special Presidential Envoy Steve Whitkoff arrived in the Russian capital. He intends to hold talks with Russian representatives and, first of all, with President Putin. Assistant to the Russian leader Yuri Ushakov said that the meeting between the President of the Russian Federation and Witkoff will take place today behind closed doors.
The press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Peskov, the day after the proposal for a truce, did not rule out possible contacts with the United States at the highest level if necessary. On March 13, Ushakov called the proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine “a temporary respite for the Ukrainian military – and nothing more.”
