Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to a proposal by U.S. President Donald Trump to halt strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure for 30 days. This agreement came during a phone call between the two leaders on Tuesday, March 18.
Putin responded positively to Trump’s initiative and immediately issued orders to the Russian military to pause attacks on energy infrastructure.
The 30-day pause is seen as a potential step towards a broader ceasefire and peace negotiations.
Putin emphasized that any resolution to the conflict must be comprehensive, lasting, and address Russia’s security concerns.
However, this agreement falls short of the unconditional 30-day ceasefire proposal that Ukraine had previously accepted. Vladimir Putin expressed concerns about the broader ceasefire and reiterated his primary requirement for ending the conflict: a total halt to foreign military and intelligence support for Kyiv.

The White House has expressed optimism about the potential for peace, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stating that they are “on the cusp of peace”. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy remains skeptical about Putin’s sincerity, as Russian military actions continue to impact Ukraine.
This development comes amid ongoing efforts by the Trump administration to broker an end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which has been the largest land war in Europe since World War II, with more than 1 million people killed since February 2022.
