U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed strong frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin over stalled Ukraine peace talks and recent comments undermining Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
During an interview with NBC News, Trump stated he was “very angry” and “pissed off” at Putin, marking a notable shift in tone as his administration struggles to broker a resolution to the three-year conflict in Ukraine.
Agence France-Presse reported that Putin on Friday called for a transitional government to be put in place in Ukraine, which could effectively push out Zelensky.
Putin’s Comments on Zelensky: Putin questioned Zelensky’s legitimacy as Ukraine’s leader and proposed a transitional government under U.N. oversight, effectively sidelining him. Trump criticized these remarks, stating they were “not heading in the right direction” and could hinder peace efforts.
Threat of Secondary Tariffs: Trump warned of imposing secondary tariffs on Russian oil if progress is not made. He suggested a 25-50% tariff on Russian oil exports, which would also block countries purchasing Russian oil from doing business in the U.S.
Ceasefire Challenges: While a limited ceasefire in the Black Sea was recently agreed upon, both sides continue military operations on the ground front line. Russia rejected a broader U.S.-Ukrainian ceasefire proposal and advanced its offensive in northeastern Ukraine. Fights continue in the Kursk, Luhank and Donetsk oblasts.
