The Trump tariffs are intended to push U.S. trade partners to lower their own barriers with the hopes of reducing a $1.2 trillion trade imbalance recorded last year, and to fulfill a campaign promise made during Trump’s campaign.

Nations that are not subject to the tariffs include Russia, Belarus, Cuba and North Korea. The White House explained why Russia is not on the list, saying “sanctions from the Ukraine war have already rendered trade between the two countries as zero.” Somalia is also exempt of tariffs.

The White House said in a press release: “For the first time in decades, the United States will see fair trade as President Donald J. Trump announces tariffs to level the playing field for American workers and businesses.

Countries that are either exempt from or face the lowest tariffs under President Trump’s recent tariff announcements include:

Canada and Mexico

These countries are not subject to the new tariffs because they are covered under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

However, they still face tariffs on goods not complying with USMCA rules, such as a 25% tariff on certain imports.

Countries with the 10% Baseline Tariff

Nations like the United Kingdom, Singapore, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Turkey, Colombia, Argentina, El Salvador, United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia are subject only to the standard 10% tariff.

Countries with the High Tariff

Trump said that the U.S. was going to be “charging a discounted reciprocal tariff” because the U.S. is kind. For China, the U.S. is levying a 34% tariff, then for Europe “we’re going to charge them 20%” and Japan 24%. U.S. President gave the list of more than a dozen countries. New tariffs are effective on April 9.

These countries do not face the higher reciprocal tariffs imposed on nations like China, the European Union, and several Southeast Asian countries. However, it’s worth noting that while these countries have lower tariffs, they may still face other trade restrictions or negotiations in the future.
