Italy’s Prime minister Meloni, visiting White House, invites U.S. president to visit for trade meetings.

President Donald Trump expressed strong optimism about reaching a trade deal with the European Union before the end of a 90-day pause on global tariffs.

During a White House meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, the first EU leader to meet Trump since he imposed and then suspended a 20% tariff on EU imports, Trump said, “There will definitely be a trade deal” and emphasized the goal of establishing “equitable agreements.” He added there was “no urgency” and anticipated minimal challenges in reaching an agreement with Europe or other partners.

Georgia Meloni, representing both Italy and informally the EU in this context, expressed faith in the unity of the West and the importance of communication to find mutual growth solutions. She indicated she could not finalize an agreement for the entire EU but aimed to invite Trump for an official visit to Italy to facilitate broader European meetings.

The White House views Meloni as a key partner to open discussions with the EU and sees her as a significant interlocutor in trade talks. Trump and Meloni share a cordial relationship and some ideological alignment, which can help bridge differences, especially as Meloni has been critical of U.S. tariffs but remains committed to dialogue. Italian political circles are traditionally close to the United States.

Trump also expressed confidence about making a trade deal with China amid these negotiations, signaling a broader effort to resolve tariff disputes and avoid a full trade war.

Trump announced that if China does not remove its 34% tariff on U.S. products by April 8, the U.S. will impose an additional 50% tariff on Chinese imports starting April 9. The 125% tariff on China came into force. But the White House said imported goods from China to the U.S. could be hit with tariffs as high as 245%.

Average US tariffs on Chinese exports now stand at 124.1 percent. These tariffs are more than 40 times higher than before the US-China tariff dispute started in early February.

In summary, both leaders conveyed a positive outlook on concluding a fair and balanced trade agreement between the US and the EU, with Meloni playing a pivotal role as a bridge between the two sides.
