Iraq has sent a high-level delegation to Damascus to explore the possibility of restoring an Iraqi oil pipeline that transports oil through Syria to Mediterranean ports. The delegation is led by Hamid al-Shatri, head of Iraq’s National Intelligence Service, and includes officials from the Ministries of Oil and Trade, Border Forces Command, and Border Crossings Authority.

The talks in Syria will focus not only on the pipeline restoration but also on enhancing counter-terrorism cooperation, securing the shared border, and expanding trade relations between Iraq and Syria. This visit reflects Iraq’s commitment to supporting Syria’s unity and sovereignty, emphasizing that Syrian stability is crucial for Iraq’s national and regional security.

This diplomatic engagement follows Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani’s recent meeting with Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Qatar, marking a significant step in reestablishing ties after the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad in late 2024. Syria is currently facing a severe energy crisis due to the collapse of its oil industry during the civil war and is looking for ways to secure oil imports amid international sanctions and financial challenges.
