U.S. President Donald Trump stated unequivocally that “Crimea will stay with Russia,” signaling a major shift in U.S. policy regarding the disputed peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014. In an interview with Time magazine published on April 25, Trump emphasized that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy “understands that,” and that the reality of Russian control over Crimea has been long established, predating Trump’s involvement.
With Trump envoy Steve Witkoff making another visit to Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, Trump wrote that “SUCCESS seems to be in the future!”
Trump’s position is part of a broader peace proposal aimed at ending the ongoing war in Ukraine, which includes potential U.S. recognition of Russia’s sovereignty over Crimea and lifting some sanctions on Moscow. He argued that the people of Crimea largely speak Russian and that the region has been under Russian influence for many years, pointing out that the annexation occurred during the Obama administration in March 2014, not his.
This stance has sparked controversy, as Zelensky and Ukraine have consistently rejected any peace deal that involves recognizing Russian control over Crimea, viewing it as a non-negotiable issue tied to Ukraine’s sovereignty and constitution. International law experts warn that U.S. recognition of Crimea as Russian territory would violate international law, including agreements such as the Budapest Memorandum, and could undermine the unity of NATO and Western support for Ukraine.

Trump’s declaration that Crimea will remain with Russia represents a significant departure from longstanding U.S. policy and places pressure on Ukraine to make territorial concessions as part of peace negotiations, while provoking strong opposition from Kyiv and raising concerns about the implications for international law and Western alliances.
