Israel will send one refurbished Patriot air-defense system to Ukraine this summer, as part of enhanced Western support amid intensified Russian missile and drone attacks, reported the New York Times. This system, previously stationed in Israel and decommissioned by the Israeli Air Force, will increase Ukraine’s total Patriot systems to about ten, alongside another expected system from Germany or Greece.

Ukraine currently operates six Patriots, with two undergoing maintenance. The transfer required U.S. approval and is aimed primarily at protecting Kyiv and other major cities.

Officials did not specify what US President Donald Trump thinks about transferring more Patriots. They also did not specify whether this decision was made before he took office, during the administration of ex-President Joe Biden.

The ninth Patriot, which arrived from Israel and is undergoing a major overhaul for Ukraine, is an old model < … >It is expected to be delivered to Ukraine by this summer,” writes the New York Times.

According to the U.S. newspaper, now Kyiv has eight systems at its disposal, while only six of them are working. Taking into account the delivery of another one from Israel and one of the European countries, Ukraine will have a total of 10 Patriot systems, which will have the advantage of protecting Kyiv from missile attacks. For the first time, the United States sent the Patriot system to Ukraine in April 2023. However, by January 2024 there was already a shortage of missiles in the country, the newspaper notes.

Kiev has repeatedly asked Western countries for additional air defense supplies. In July 2024, Washington announced the transfer of four Patriot complexes from Western countries to Ukraine in addition to what it already has. One system was promised to be provided by the United States, Romania, Germany and Italy.

In mid-April 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced his readiness to buy 10 Patriot air defense systems from the United States. In the same month, it became known that Trump had abandoned a deal with Ukraine to buy 10 anti-aircraft missile systems worth $50 billion.
