Pakistan on Saturday carried out a test launch of the Abdali ballistic missile, the Associated Press (AP) reported, citing the Pakistani military.

The range of the surface-to-surface missile was 450 km, the press agency notes.

The Pakistani military said the launch was carried out to test the “operational readiness of the troops and key technical parameters,” including the missile’s advanced navigation system and improved maneuverability.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif “congratulated all those who were behind the successful test.”

On April 27, the Indian Navy announced the successful conduct of ship firing in order to “confirm and demonstrate the readiness of systems and crews to deliver a high-precision offensive strike at a long distance.”

The agency notes that the launch of the missile took place in the context of a sharp aggravation of relations between Pakistan and India due to the terrorist attack on April 22, when in the Indian city of Pahalgam in the north of the country, a group of militants opened fire on people in a place of a large crowd of tourists. According to the latest data, 26 people were killed in the attack.

Tensions between India and Pakistan have sharply escalated following a deadly militant attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that killed 26 people, mostly Indian tourists, near the resort town of Pahalgam on April 22. India has described the incident as a terrorist attack with cross-border links and blamed Pakistan for backing the militants, specifically pointing to a group called Kashmir Resistance, which India alleges is a front for a Pakistani military-backed militant organization. Eyewitnesses reported that attackers questioned victims about their religion before shooting, indicating a targeted massacre.

India blamed Pakistan for the attack, but Islamabad denied the accusations. Both countries are nuclear powers and have large armies.
