U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly urged Ukraine to immediately accept Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal for direct peace talks scheduled to take place in Istanbul on May 15. Trump emphasized on social media that Ukraine should consent “IMMEDIATELY” to the meeting without waiting for a ceasefire, arguing that the talks would clarify whether a deal is possible and enable the U.S. and European leaders to respond accordingly. He framed this as a critical step toward ending the three-year conflict, which has caused massive casualties and destruction.

Ukrainian president Zelensky stated on social media that he would be “waiting for Putin in Türkiye on Thursday. Personally,” expressing hope that Russia would not delay or find excuses this time.

This agreement to talks comes after Putin proposed direct negotiations without preconditions aimed at achieving a durable peace, though Moscow has not accepted the 30-day ceasefire demanded by Ukraine and its Western allies as a prerequisite for talks. Zelensky reiterated that Ukraine awaits a full and lasting ceasefire starting immediately to provide the necessary basis for diplomacy but signaled readiness to engage in discussions nonetheless.

Western nations continue to insist on a 30-day cessation of hostilities as a condition for meaningful negotiations to end the war started on February 24, 2022.
