US President Donald Trump announced a phone call to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on May 19.

“I will speak on the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday at 10:00 am [17:00 Moscow time],” he wrote in Truth Social.

Trump said that the topics of the call would be: the end of hostilities in Ukraine and trade relations. After that, Trump plans to call Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky and the leaders of NATO member countries.

Trump stated on Truth Social that he hopes the day will be “productive,” leading to a ceasefire and an end to the war, which he described as “a war that should have never happened

On May 16, after the first Russian-Ukrainian talks in three years, Trump said that it was time for him to meet personally with Russian President Putin to discuss ways to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.

Following the meeting in Istanbul, the Russian and Ukrainian sides exchanged proposals for a ceasefire and tentatively agreed on a large-scale exchange of prisoners according to the “1000 for 1000” formula. The representative of the Russian Federation noted that Moscow took note of Kyiv’s initiative on a possible meeting between Putin and Zelensky.

As Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian President, clarified, a meeting of the leaders of the two countries is possible if certain agreements are reached by the negotiating groups.
