Elon Musk is officially leaving the Trump administration as his 130-day appointment as a special government employee comes to an end around May 30, 2025. He led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), overseeing significant federal workforce reductions and efforts to cut government spending. Musk expressed gratitude to President Trump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful expenditures and stated that the DOGE mission will continue and strengthen as it becomes integrated into government operations.
Additionally, his departure followed his public criticism of President Trump’s flagship legislative proposal, the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill,” which Musk described as a “massive spending bill” that increases the federal deficit and undermines the efforts of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) that he led. Musk openly expressed disappointment with the bill, stating it could be “big or beautiful, but not both,” signaling a clear break with Trump’s legislative agenda.
During his tenure, Musk’s team eliminated about 12% of the federal civilian workforce, roughly 260,000 employees, through layoffs, buyouts, and early retirements. However, his role was marked by controversy, including protests and criticism from investors urging him to focus on his businesses like Tesla and SpaceX. Musk also publicly criticized Trump’s recent “big, beautiful bill,” a major tax and spending package, saying it would increase the budget deficit and undermine DOGE’s efforts.

Musk has begun the offboarding process and plans to focus more on his private ventures after stepping down. The Trump administration has indicated that DOGE’s work will continue even after Musk’s departure, with team members remaining embedded in federal agencies for some time.
