The United States and China are scheduled to hold a new round of high-level trade talks in London on Monday, June 9. The U.S. delegation will be led by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, as announced by President Donald Trump on his Truth Social platform. The Chinese delegation’s composition has not been officially confirmed.

These talks follow a recent 90-minute phone conversation between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which Trump described as “very positive.” During the call, both leaders agreed to advance negotiations aimed at resolving ongoing trade disputes, particularly concerning tariffs and the supply of rare earth minerals critical to various industries. Trump also stated that Xi agreed to restart exports of rare earth minerals and magnets to the U.S., which had been slowed, posing risks to American manufacturers reliant on these materials.

The upcoming London talks seek to break the current stalemate after an earlier agreement in May in Geneva to reduce tariffs significantly. However, tensions have resurfaced, especially over mineral exports and U.S. visa policies for Chinese students. Analysts view the talks as a positive step but acknowledge that negotiations will be challenging given the complex issues involved.
