Iran would be signalling a desire to de-escalate hostilities with Israel and is seeking to revive nuclear negotiations, but with the condition that the United States stays out of the conflict, reports the sources of the Wall Street Journal. Tehran has communicated through Arab intermediaries to both Israel and the U.S., expressing willingness to return to talks and limit violence escalation if Washington refrains from direct involvement in the fighting. These messages indicate Iran’s interest in halting the ongoing Israeli strikes and restarting nuclear discussions, suggesting some flexibility on Iran’s part if a ceasefire can be achieved.
The background to this comes amid intense Israeli airstrikes targeting Iran’s nuclear and military sites, which have caused significant casualties, mostly among Iranian civilians, and have escalated tensions to a dangerous level. Israel continues its campaign with promises of further strikes, while Iran vows severe retaliation. The conflict has drawn international attention, with world leaders at the G7 summit emphasizing the need to prevent further escalation and promote diplomatic solutions. U.S. President Donald Trump has urged both Iran and Israel to engage in immediate talks to de-escalate the conflict, warning that Iran is not prevailing in the war and that dialogue should happen “before it’s too late”.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said that missile strikes on Iran “contribute to the security of Europe,” so they will continue. He wrote about this on the social network X, indicating that he had conveyed this opinion to the head of EU diplomacy, Kaja Kallas.
Iran, battered by Israeli strikes, is signaling through intermediaries a readiness to de-escalate and negotiate with Israel, conditioned on the U.S. staying out of the conflict, while the international community pushes for urgent diplomatic engagement to prevent a wider regional war.
On June 16, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Iran is seeking “fake” negotiations and an end to missile attacks in order to continue developing nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles that pose a direct threat to Israel. PM Netanyahu denied the publication of The Wall Street Journal, according to which Iran allegedly expressed its readiness to stop hostilities and return to dialogue on the nuclear program.
Senior Iranian officials disagreed with the information that Tehran had allegedly asked Arab mediators to end the war. This was reported by Reuters and the WSJ newspaper, the latter also reported that a possible pause in hostilities would allow Iran to regroup and intensify diplomatic pressure on Israel.
In October 2024, Iran launched a significant missile attack against Israel, marking a dramatic escalation in regional tensions. This military action was primarily a response to recent Israeli airstrikes targetting Lebanon, that resulted in the deaths of key Hezbollah leaders, including Hassan Nasrallah. The Iranian military, specifically its Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), stated that the missile barrage was retaliation for these attacks on its allies in Lebanon.
