Within 48 hours of starting its strikes on Iran, Israel claimed to have achieved full air superiority over the western part of the country, including Tehran. Israeli warplanes have been conducting strikes from within Iranian airspace rather than relying solely on long-range missiles, enabling more precise and sustained attacks on key targets such as missile launchers, air defense systems, command centers, and nuclear facilities. The Israeli military reported destroying over 120 surface-to-surface missile launchers—about a third of Iran’s total—and striking multiple command centers in Tehran, including those linked to the Quds Force, an elite branch of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.

This air superiority has allowed Israel to expand its campaign geographically, targeting not only military infrastructure but also regime institutions related to internal security and social control, such as the Ministry of Intelligence and Security and the Law Enforcement Command headquarters in Tehran. These strikes have contributed to destabilizing Iran’s coercive apparatus amid worsening energy shortages caused by attacks on critical energy infrastructure.

Despite Israel’s dominance in the skies, some Iranian air defenses remain, and Iran continues to launch missile barrages against Israel, maintaining a missile threat that Israel’s defense systems intercept at a high rate. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties on both sides and has drawn international concern, with evacuations ordered in parts of Tehran due to the ongoing air campaign.

The background to this comes amid intense Israeli airstrikes targeting Iran’s nuclear and military sites, which have caused significant casualties, mostly among Iranian civilians, and have escalated tensions to a dangerous level. Israel continues its campaign with promises of further strikes, while Iran vows severe retaliation. The conflict has drawn international attention, with world leaders at the G7 summit emphasizing the need to prevent further escalation and promote diplomatic solutions. U.S. President Donald Trump has urged both Iran and Israel to engage in immediate talks to de-escalate the conflict, warning that Iran is not prevailing in the war and that dialogue should happen “before it’s too late”.
