Iran has signaled very low interest in diplomacy following the U.S. strikes on its nuclear sites, condemning the attacks as a grave violation of international law and a betrayal of ongoing diplomatic efforts. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the U.S. operation as “outrageous, grave and unprecedented,” accusing the U.S. of sabotaging negotiations that were underway with the E3/EU and the U.S. itself just days before the strikes.

Iran’s leadership has reserved “all options” for self-defense, warning of “everlasting consequences” and emphasizing its readiness to respond militarily if necessary. The Iranian ambassador to the United Nations called for an emergency Security Council session to address what Tehran calls “heinous attacks and illegal use of force”. Iranian state media has escalated rhetoric by declaring all American citizens and soldiers in the region as “legitimate targets,” signaling a hardline stance rather than willingness to return to dialogue.

Internationally, most countries and organizations have expressed alarm and urged restraint and diplomacy, but Iran’s official position remains defiant and focused on retaliation rather than renewed negotiations.

The background to this comes amid intense Israeli airstrikes targeting Iran’s nuclear and military sites, which have caused significant casualties, mostly among Iranian civilians, and have escalated tensions to a dangerous level. Israel continues its campaign with promises of further strikes, while Iran vows severe retaliation.

This week the U.S. President Donald Trump was seriously considering various options regarding the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, including the possibility of a U.S. military strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities. The U.S. is reportedly contemplating targeting Iran’s uranium enrichment site at Fordo, a subterranean facility believed to be crucial to Iran’s nuclear program.

Iran’s response to the U.S. strikes strongly indicates a rejection of diplomacy in the near term, with the government prioritizing military readiness and retaliation over dialogue.
