Thales and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace have agreed to establish a 50/50 joint venture in Norway that combines their defense communications businesses to address the growing connectivity needs of defense forces in Norway, NATO countries, and other allied nations.
The new company will merge Thales’ crypto and secure communications business with Kongsberg’s tactical communications unit, employing around 350 people across Oslo, Trondheim, and Asker. In 2024, the combined businesses generated revenues of approximately NOK 1.5 billion (€130 million), with projections to reach NOK 3 billion (€254 million) by the end of the decade, driven by substantial market opportunities and product synergies.
Thales contributes expertise in high-grade cryptographic networks and voice communication systems for NATO and allied forces, while Kongsberg provides tactical radio systems for land domains, including combat vehicles and soldiers, as well as tactical networks for systems like the NASAMS air defense system. The joint venture aims to create a comprehensive, robust communications offering that enhances interoperability, sovereignty, and large-scale equipment delivery for European armed forces.
Executives from both companies emphasized that the partnership will strengthen bilateral cooperation between Norway and France, leverage complementary portfolios, and expand international market access, particularly through Thales’ global distribution network. The joint venture remains subject to customary regulatory approvals before finalization.
