The Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq all slide today amid growing concerns over tariffs and economic uncertainties. The Dow dropped approximately 330 points (about 0.74%), the S&P 500 fell about 0.37%, and the Nasdaq declined slightly by 0.03% as of the latest trading session on July 31.

This slide reflects increased anxiety around U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff measures, which have targeted multiple countries and industries, creating uncertainty about trade policies and their economic impacts. Investors remain cautious as tariffs raise fears of inflation, slower economic growth, and disrupted supply chains. The markets have shown sensitivity to tariff announcements and retaliatory measures, such as China’s tariffs on American goods, which have heightened recession worries globally.

Although recent weeks saw resilience and some record highs, ongoing tariff threats continue to weigh on market sentiment. Investors are also bracing for upcoming earnings reports and economic data releases that could provide insight into how trade tensions are affecting corporate performance and broader economic conditions.

The Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge, the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) released on Thursday morning showed price increases accelerated in June as inflation remained above the Fed’s 2% target.

However, the U.S. economy’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew at an annualized rate of 3% in the second quarter of 2025, rebounding strongly from a 0.5% contraction in the first quarter. This growth exceeded economists’ expectations of around 2.4% to 2.6% and reflects a significant recovery.

In summary, the recent declines in the Dow, S&P 500, and Nasdaq are directly linked to investor concerns about tariffs and their potential negative consequences on the U.S. and global economies amid an unsettled trade environment.
