On August 8, Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a landmark peace accord in Washington D.C., brokered and witnessed by U.S. President Donald Trump. The agreement aims to end decades of conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region and establish lasting peace and stability between the two countries. Key elements include border delimitation, security cooperation, and steps to normalize bilateral relations.

The accord also grants the U.S. exclusive development rights for a strategic transit corridor called the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP) through Armenian territory, which will facilitate regional transportation infrastructure such as rail, oil, gas, fiber optic lines, and possibly electricity transmission. This corridor will enhance connectivity between Azerbaijan’s mainland and its Nakhchivan exclave via Armenia.

Leaders at the signing—Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev—expressed optimism about a new chapter of peace. The deal was described as a historic milestone, with Aliyev calling it a “miracle” and nominating Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. The United States will also step back from its role in the OSCE Minsk Group, the previous main mediator in the conflict.

While the deal focuses on ending hostilities, reopening trade and transportation routes, and respecting territorial sovereignty, some Armenian diaspora groups criticize it for leaving unresolved issues such as the status of displaced Armenians and cultural sites.

Overall, this agreement marks a significant diplomatic achievement aiming to turn a formerly conflict-ridden region into one of cooperation and prosperity.
