The U.S. President Donald Trump said that he would eventually be able to “sit down at the negotiating table” the leaders of Russia and Ukraine, Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky. He did not rule out personal participation in such a meeting.

“I will sit them both in the same room with me or without me and I think that they will resolve the issue,” Donald Trump said at a press conference at the White House.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he was ready to discuss territorial issues only personally with Vladimir Putin, and the organization of such a summit was one of the most important tasks of the negotiations between the delegations of Ukraine and Russia. At the same time, the Kremlin called such a meeting premature until the parties agreed on the terms of a peace agreement.

Putin has expressed opposition to meeting Zelensky under current conditions, saying certain prerequisites for such a meeting are not yet met. Zelensky also rejected any peace agreements that would involve Ukraine ceding territory to Russia, which Trump suggested might be part of a deal.

The Alaska talks will be the first face-to-face meeting between Trump and Putin since 2019, aimed at pursuing a ceasefire and a resolution to the war in Ukraine, but the initial summit will not include Zelensky. The U.S. White House and Trump have kept open the possibility of inviting Zelensky to future meetings following the Alaska meeting on August 15.

On August 9 U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15, in Alaska. The meeting is intended to discuss a possible ceasefire and peace deal to end the war in Ukraine, which started on February 24, 2022.
