President Donald Trump has publicly assured that no U.S. troops will be deployed to Ukraine as part of any peace or security arrangement, stating, “You have my assurance—and I’m president” when questioned about sending American soldiers to defend Ukraine’s border against Russia. Trump reiterated this position in a televised interview on August 19, 2025, following high-level meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders at the White House.
Trump outlined that while the U.S. will help guarantee Ukraine’s security—likely through advanced weaponry, aerial support, or other resources—European nations will be at the forefront of any on-the-ground security guarantees, and “it can’t be NATO,” referring to Ukraine’s aspirations for membership in the alliance.
This pledge comes amid ongoing diplomacy, with Trump facilitating discussions between Ukraine and Russia and pushing for European allies to lead security arrangements, reflecting his longstanding promise to avoid direct U.S. military involvement in international conflicts.
Fox News published an interview with Donald Trump after meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky and EU leaders at the White House.
“I’m just trying to stop people from being killed,” he continued. “They’re losing 5,000 to 7,000 people a week in that ridiculous war that should have never happened. If we had a normal president — not even a great president — if we had normal president, it wouldn’t have happened.”
Trump said he intends to let Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky meet one-on-one before focusing on a broader trilateral discussion.
