NATO planes shot down Russian drones deep inside Poland on September 9, 2025, marking the first time allied aircraft used force to defend NATO airspace during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. At least 19 Russian military drones entered Polish airspace, with several being shot down by Polish and NATO fighter jets, including Dutch F-35s and Polish F-16s. The drone incursions caused the temporary closure of multiple airports, including Warsaw Chopin Airport.

Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the incident as a large-scale provocation and invoked Article 4 of the NATO treaty for consultations among member countries.

The incident was characterized by Polish officials as an act of aggression posing a real threat to the safety of Polish citizens, prompting NATO to place air defense systems on high alert and scramble quick reaction aircraft. No casualties were reported, but some drones or debris caused property damage within Poland.

Poland is now sending military equipment and troops to its border with Belarus amid escalating tensions triggered by Russia-led military exercises in Belarus, known as Zapad-2025. The Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that Poland will close its border crossings with Belarus starting midnight on September 11, as a national security precaution due to aggressive Russian-Belarusian maneuvers occurring very close to the border.
