Poland is sending military equipment and troops to its border with Belarus amid escalating tensions triggered by Russia-led military exercises in Belarus, known as Zapad-2025. The Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that Poland will close its border crossings with Belarus starting midnight on September 11, as a national security precaution due to aggressive Russian-Belarusian maneuvers occurring very close to the border.
Poland, a NATO member state, has already deployed military personnel to patrol the border and is conducting large military exercises with NATO allies to prepare for any potential threats. These measures come after a series of provocations from Belarus and Moscow, including sabotage, espionage, and migration-related provocations along the border.
The Zapad-2025 exercises include simulated nuclear weapons use and testing of advanced hypersonic missiles, raising serious security concerns in Poland and neighboring NATO countries such as Lithuania and Latvia. Poland’s response also involves closing most border crossings and intensifying military readiness, with allied forces participating in defense drills in Poland as well.
Zapad 2025 is a scheduled Russian-Belarusian joint strategic military exercise, to be conducted in Belarus on 12–16 September 2025. Belarus has said the drills will test the Union State’s defensive readiness, with main activities staged at central training areas near Barysaw and a reciprocal movement of units between the two states. It will be the first Zapad exercise since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
