NATO has launched a new mission called “Eastern Sentry” to bolster the defenses of its eastern flank following a recent Russian drone incursion into Polish airspace. The operation aims to enhance the alliance’s air and ground-based defenses, improve information sharing among member countries, and strengthen overall military readiness along the eastern border with Russia.
Eastern Sentry involves troops and capabilities from several NATO allies, including France, Germany, Denmark, the United Kingdom, and others expected to join.
The mission will initially focus on Poland but will gradually extend its defense coverage from the High North near the Baltic states all the way to the Black Sea and the Mediterranean.
NATO will deploy additional fighter jets (such as France’s Rafale and Germany’s Eurofighters and Denmark’s F-16s), naval assets, and integrated air defense systems like the German Patriot missile system.
The mission emphasizes flexibility, agility, and adaptability to respond promptly to emerging threats, particularly from Russian aggression.
This response comes after Russia’s repeated drone violations of NATO airspace, which Poland has characterized as acts of aggression.

NATO leadership highlights that a threat to one ally is a threat to all, reaffirming the collective defense principle under Article 5 of the NATO treaty.
The mission is seen as a vital step by NATO leaders to deter further Russian provocations and to reassure eastern European members of NATO’s commitment to their security, amid war in Ukraine since February 2022 and military drill ZAPAD-2025 in Belarus with Russian forces.
