China has achieved a new significant milestone in its compact nuclear fusion Tokamak project called BEST (Burning Plasma Experimental Superconducting Tokamak), currently under construction in Hefei, Anhui Province. The project recently completed the installation of the Dewar base, the first key component of the device’s main unit, marking a vital step towards the world’s first demonstration of electricity generation from fusion power.

BEST aims to replicate the nuclear fusion process that powers the sun by achieving stable burning of deuterium-tritium plasma and reaching an unprecedented five-fold energy gain. This compact, high-field Tokamak is designed to explore advanced burning plasma physics and steady-state plasma performance with high neutron flux, targeting completion by 2027. Full-scale assembly of the device began in May 2025.

The project represents an intermediate step bridging China’s earlier EAST Tokamak and future larger reactors like the Chinese Fusion Engineering Demo Reactor (CFEDR), advancing towards commercial viability of fusion energy. China’s rapid advancements in fusion technology, including maintaining record plasma temperatures and durations, underline its leading role in the global fusion race and the promise of near-limitless clean energy.

Last January, the China’s Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST), often referred to as the “artificial sun,” has alredy achieved a milestone in nuclear fusion research by maintaining a plasma loop for 1,066 seconds (approximately 17 minutes and 46 seconds) at temperatures exceeding 180 million degrees Fahrenheit. This achievement, reported on January 20, surpasses the previous record of 403 seconds, also set by EAST in 2023.
